Opened in 1927, West Block has been central to Australian history, once housing the National Library, Crown Solicitor’s Office, and even Prime Ministers’ offices. During WWII, its “Cable Girls” encoded and decrypted secret messages between Curtin, Churchill, and Roosevelt, making the site a critical part of the Allied war effort.
Today, West Block has been revitalised into an A-Grade office building with over 8,000 sqm of premium workspace. The refurbishment restored heritage features, revealed concealed archways and timber beams, and upgraded facilities while maintaining John Smith Murdoch’s original design intent.
Novon Lighting supported the transformation with Australian-made troffers, delivering efficient, modern lighting that complements the building’s heritage character. While external areas were bound by heritage guidelines, Novon’s internal solutions enhanced functionality across office floors, ensuring the space meets today’s workplace standards while honouring its historic past.
